Geiranger on the World Heritage List

Geirangerfjord is recognised as the world’s most beautiful fjord. The scenery here is magnificent, wild and stunning. With the fjord, waterfalls and steep mountains, Geiranger has become one of Norway’s most popular tourist attractions.

The areas surrounding Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord are ranked amongst the most beautiful fjord landscapes in the world. The fjords are flanked by steep mountainsides towering from 500 metres below the water’s surface to heights of 1400 metres. Over these steep mountainsides, numerous waterfalls throw themselves down towards the fjord, one more beautiful than the next, while countless rivers tumble down from jagged mountains, glaciers and lakes, running through thick forest and down to the fjord.

In 2005, UNESCO decided to inscribe Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord with surrounding areas on its UNESCO World Heritage List, for the world’s most important sites of cultural and natural heritage. This is Norway’s first site of natural heritage on this prestigious list, well earned due to the area’s outstanding geological value and the unique and stunning landscapes.
